Periyar National Park

Periyar National park is located in the western ghats of the Kerala. This place is one of the famous tourist's destinations in Kerala state. The destination is mainly known for its tiger reserves across the globe. Many tourists from various countries visit this place to experience the renowned wildlife sanctuary. The national park is one of the oldest sanctuaries in India. The park is home for the Asiatic wild elephants. The total area of the park is around 778 sq km and is situated about 1200 to 1800 m above the sea level. This park acts a protected Tiger reserve as well as a National park. When you are in this famous park then the main attraction you will get to see is the Periyar Lake.

When you are in this park then you will get many adventurous opportunities. If you are planning your trip at the Periyar National park then it is recommended to visit the sanctuary between the months of October to March.

When you are in the Periyar National Park then you will notice that the park consists three types of forests which include Moist Deciduous Forest, Tropical Evergreen Forests and also Semi Evergreen Forests. It has wide variety of vegetation in the forest. There are around 1,963 species of plants in this national park that belongs to the 823 genera and also 159 families have been recognized by the Kerala Forest Research Institute experts.

The Periyar National park is a home for many Indian elephants. You will get to see many other species of animals and birds in this park. The animals that you will notice in the park include Indian Wild Dog, Gaur, Mouse Deer, Sambar, Wild Pigs, Barking Deer and very rarely tigers. As per the reports it is believed that there are approximately 40 tigers in the Periyar wildlife sanctuary. There are around four species of primates in the Periyar National park that includes Bonnet Macaque, rare lion-tailed macaque, Common Langur and Nilgiri Langur.

The way through which you can reach the Periyar National park is through the gate of Thekkady which is located a few kilometres away from Kumily. Kumily is located at the border of the Tamil Nadu and it is very well connected to Madurai, Theni, Kodaikanal in the Tamil Nadu state and Kottayam state in Kerala. The Periyar National park is an attractive park where you will have a great time with your friends and family.
